We had houseguests last week and just before they were headed out one of them asked me:

“If you could give me just one tip for weight loss, what would it be?”

I didn’t get a chance to say anything before someone else said “Give up bread.” I had to agree with them and I even said “Yeah, if you gave up bread you’d likely lose weight right away.”

The exchange stuck with me, and I wanted to do better – respond differently. Luckily, that person reads these newsletters! So here’s my do-over:

Anything you do will work – but probably not for long.

You could:
Give up bread
Give up breakfast
Give up sugar
Give up refined carbohydrates
Eat more fiber
Meditate

All of those things could work. Then they’d stop.

Our bodies are really good at staying the same. Once the get the clue that you’ve changed it up they want to get back to their set weight, whatever that is. So if I was going to tell that person one thing she could do to lose weight I’d say:

“Keep your body guessing – and stop snacking!”

Google defines homeostasis as the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.

So, you’re body is working hard to stay the same. It knows you. Be different. Shake it up.

Start there – tell me how it goes!
