“I want that.”

Hmmm….  How are you feeling?  URGENT!

Have you ever had an urge for (popcorn, pizza, ice cream, fill in the blank) and been in your car and halfway to buy it before you even really knew what you were doing?

That’s responding to the urge.  That’s the desire to get to a different state IMMEDIATELY!

How does the urge serve you?  (stick with me here…)

Usually, the food is something you like, it’s comfort, reward, distraction, relief.  It probably even tastes good!  You may get to be “bad” because you had it and that fuels your rebel spirit…

You got out of the house, changed the environment, distracted yourself from (kids, relaxing, partners, more work, whatever you don’t have the bandwidth for at 7:52pm…).

Then, once you’ve eaten the thing (no, it doesn’t matter what it is, it could even be “healthy” food) you feel different.  Mission accomplished!  No more urge, you solved it!  Go you, check that off the list.

Right?  For me, I love to get things done, so having an urge, getting the thing, eating it and feeling different really plays to my desire for completion.

Then, you may even get to feel guilty for doing it – and that really works for you because you’ve got a strong habit of feeling bad about things and food makes it easy to keep that up.

So, what do you do when the eating of something feels urgent?  Not like “Oh, yeah, that sounds good.”  but “I have to have that.”  Comment below, tell me everything.  I’d love to hear from you.
